I use herb and plant lore a great deal, when thinking of what I am planting in my garden or what I am putting into a spell or incense.
I use them so often I like to have a small store of them.

BUT herbs & plants should not and DO not cost a small fortune to buy and keep ‘’in stock.’’

If any shop is saying ‘’this is more expensive because its so hard to get hold of’’ then they are frankly talking twaddle and doing nothing more than looking to get money from you.

Any plant/herb worth using is going to one found in your local area, your garden or at the very least be something you are familiar or connect with. Magic is all about focus and intent, why would you scour the web and world for ‘’unicorns tail hair sprinkled with dragon spit’’ if you have no idea what it is, what it does, nor why you apparently need it.

Moreover, you should not be buying, or rather shops should not be selling, these plants/herbs in massive quantities (again costing more).
Think of these as ingredients in a recipe, you want the freshest for your meal, not something you have had in the cupboard for two years because you brought it in bulk because there was a sale on.

For both the above reasons I have a herb garden, growing the herbs I use most, both in cooking and magic, that way I can have them fresh, literally picking as I need them.

BUT there are times when they are not in season and also not practical. In these cases we can buy, or find.

I, sadly, do not have an oak tree in my garden so I have collected and dried naturally fallen oak bark/wood from forest trips.
Similarly I do not have an endless supply of cloves, yet I use them, surprisingly often, so I brought a £1 bag from the local metaphysical shop, and stored them (along with a few other herbs and plants) in air tight herb jars, all labelled and easy to use. I'm sure I will use them up at Yule in oranges for decorations for the Yule Tree if I've not used them magically.

I personally keep my herbs/plants in air tight containers, in the cupboard under my altar. They may look very pretty and witchy displayed on shelves, but again, like ingredients, would you place those in sunlight or store them in the food cupboard?

Again like cooking, play around with the ingredients, see what success you have with different kinds and methods.
Do remember some herbs and plants are poisonous and may not be suitable for working with.
